Did Elton John Have a Hair Transplant?
Sir Elton John is a legendary British musician and singer-songwriter who has sold over 300 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists in music history. Known for iconic hits like "Rocket Man," "Your Song," and "Candle in the Wind," John has been a dominant force in popular music for over five decades. Elton John has publicly confirmed undergoing hair transplant procedures to address his progressive hair loss. In his 2019 autobiography Me, he revealed having a strip of hair taken from his scalp and transplanted into his crown. Photographic evidence from the 1970s and early 1980s shows the musician experiencing significant male pattern baldness, with his hair loss appearing to reach approximately a Norwood Scale 4-5 pattern, affecting both his hairline and crown area. John has stated he underwent two hair transplants in Paris in the late 1970s, performed by Pierre Putot, after his 1976 tour. The techniques used would have primarily been the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method, also known as strip harvesting, which was the standard approach during that period. Given the extent of his original hair loss, experts estimate he would have needed between 4,000 to 6,000 grafts across several procedures. Unfortunately, both transplant procedures were unsuccessful. In his autobiography, John candidly discussed the possible reasons, stating: "I'm not sure why, but it didn't take... Perhaps it had something to do with the amount of drugs I was taking. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the one thing they told me I must not do in the weeks after the procedure was wear a hat, advice I chose to completely ignore." Throughout his career, John has been remarkably open about various cosmetic procedures and lifestyle choices, speaking about his hair transplantation in the press, in his memoir, and in his 1997 film entitled Tantrums and Tiaras. Following the failed transplants, John initially wore a weave and later transitioned to professionally fitted hairpieces crafted by Hollywood wig makers. Currently, Elton John is transparent about wearing a toupee, stating simply: "Yes, I am bald, but I don't like being bald, so I wear a toupee!" His openness about his hair restoration journey and his current use of hairpieces demonstrates a confident approach to addressing hair loss concerns, contributing to his continued stage presence well into his seventies.
